A THIEF who stole three glass vases worth £73 from a garden centre drove over a 76-year-old employee who was trying to stop him fleeing the car park.
Christopher Ogley’s car struck pensioner Roger Pell, who was thrown to the ground outside Spring Green Nurseries on Doncaster Road, Crofton, Wakefield.
Magistrates at Wakefield heard Ogley then reversed over Mr Pell, who spent a night in hospital after suffering severe bruising and a broken finger.
Mr Pell’s son Jonathan, who also works at the garden centre, repeatedly punched Ogley in the face through the open driver’s side window of the car in a bid to stop him.
Ogley’s car struck a BMW X5 in the car park along with another vehicle before fleeing the scene during the incident just before 5pm on August 16.
Ogley, 43, of Cambridge Street, Castleford, admitted assaulting Roger Pell and causing him actual bodily harm in relation to the incidents with the car.
He also admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and theft of the two glass vases.
Prosecutor, Gaynor Zeki said Ogley got into his car and locked the doors, but Jonathan Pell managed to open the driver’s side door through the open window as his father stood by the passenger door.
Mrs Zeki said: “The defendant flung the passenger door open and said ‘just take them’. Suddenly, the defendant started the engine and reversed the car. The open passenger door has knocked down Roger Pell, who knocked his head on the ground.
“The defendant continued to reverse at speed and in the process of reversing the front near side wheel has run over Roger Pell, who was lying on the ground.”
Mrs Zeki said Jonathan Pell then punched Ogley three or four times in the face in a bid to stop him causing more damage or injury.
Mrs Zeki said there were tyre marks on Roger Pell’s body and clothing, adding: “Miraculously his injuries have not been severe.”
District Judge Sandra Knapton told Ogley: “My powers of punishment are inadequate, I’m committing this case to Leeds Crown Court for sentence.”
Ogley was granted conditional bail until he is sentenced on September 30.
He must not go within 50 yards of Spring Green Nurseries.
