The congregation at a West Yorkshire church can once again see the light.

A six-month project to restore a historic stained glass window at Holy Trinity Church in Ossett has finally been completed.

Specialist glazers dismantled the west window and painstakingly cleaned every one of the thousands of pieces of glass before replaced them in new lead.

Four tons of stone, which supported the window, was also replaced before the final panes of glass were gently eased into position yesterday.

Now, the previously faded window – which depicts events leading up to the Resurrection – is as vibrant and colourful as it was when it first installed when the church was built in 1865.

The £150,000 restoration was made possible thanks to local fundraising, English Heritage cash and a £59,000 grant from environmental group WREN.

Rev Paul Maybury, vicar at Holy Trinity, said: “This marks the completion of the next significant stage in our programme of repair and restoration.

“It will ensure that this magnificent building – important to its region and community both architecturally and historically – will survive and be enjoyed for future generations.’

He added: “The window was in quite a sorry state, which is why we have been able to access the funding we have been granted.

“English Heritage will only fund significant work on buildings which they consider would be loss to the heritage of the nation if they didn’t fund it.”

The Grade II listed building has a 226ft tall spire – one of the tallest in Yorkshire.

More than £1m has been spent on restoring the church and opening it up for community use over the last 10 years.

Old pews which clogged up the interior have been removed and a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system installed.

The church is now widely used by the community for concerts, exhibitions and even Zumba dance classes.
