Heat is on waste Leeds incinerator plan

Objectors fighting plans for a waste incinerator are turning up the heat on the scheme and calling on people to support their campaign.

Groups opposing the controversial scheme are hoping hundreds of letters of objection and petitions will be lodged with Leeds City Council before councillors make a decision on the planning application.

Plans have been drawn up for the power-generating incinerator to be built on the former wholesale market site in Cross Green.

Veolia ES Aurora Ltd, the company the council has chosen to build and operate the electricity-generating incinerator that will burn household waste under a 25-year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract, submitted the planning application earlier this year.

So far the council’s website shows that so far the objections include over 50 letters and a petition signed by 25 people.

Sarah Covell, of the No2incinerator group, said objections submitted would have to be based on solid planning grounds to make sure they carried weight.

She said: “We hope to present the council with hundreds of objections. Draft objections letters are in circulation and we are urging people to sign up to them and get them into the council.

“We don’t believe there is any justification for such a huge building to be built in Cross Green. It will be one of the biggest buildings in Leeds to be so close the houses.

“Lorry movements and diesel fumes are also a concern and, as people are recycling more and more, there will not be enough residual waste to feed this incinerator in the years ahead.”

Some objectors have concerns over what could be emitted from the incinerator’s chimney

In their letter of objection, the Friends of the Earth say the council should consider alternatives to incineration, such anaerobic digestion.
