‘Heartless’ thieves take pupils’ bronze plaques

‘Heartless’ thieves take pupils’ bronze plaques from Leeds cemetery

The five engraved plaques – showing images drawn by children from Ingram Road Primary School – were secured to concrete at Holbeck Cemetery with six-inch metal spikes.

But that didn’t stop raiders ripping them from the viewing platform at the Beeston Road burial ground, in Beeston Hill.

Eve Tidswell, of the voluntary Friends of Holbeck Cemetery group, said: “We’re really fed up and sad for the children who designed them.

“It’s not often that young children have an opportunity to do something like this. We thought it would help them to grow up realising what a beautiful place it is by getting them to look at it in a different way. It’s such a shame.”

Pupils from Ingram Road were taken to the cemetery to draw pictures of what they could see in 2008.

Their designs were made into plaques, one of which carries a quote from the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The 1ft plaques were paid for through grants from environmental charities BTCV People’s Places and Green Leeds and Leeds City Council.

The project cost several thousand pounds. It is thought the raid happened at some point between January 30 and February 5.

Mrs Tidswell added: “They were so well secured, it must have taken some effort to remove them. They’re really distinctive, it would be obvious to any scrap dealer what they are.”

Holbeck Neighbourhood Policing Team have visited local scrap merchants without success and have increased patrols in the area.

Sgt James Hinchcliffe said: “Stealing from a cemetery is about as low as it gets, Those who carried out this crime are particularly heartless because the items taken were clearly designed with the help of schoolchildren, who will no doubt be extremely disappointed.” Call police on 0113 241 4629.
