As part of a science initiative to find out more about creepy critters, the Year 2 pupils handled insects ranging from hissing cockroaches and African millipedes to corn snakes and emperor scorpions.

For the more squeamish, giant rabbits, guinea pigs, white tree frogs and little gerbils were available for a gentler introduction into animal kingdom.

The creatures visited Richmond House School, courtesy of Zoolab, which supplies curriculum based workshops for children with a whole range of hands-on roadshows with exotic animals, aimed at being fascinating, entertaining, fun and scary all at the same time.

The mini zoo ranger, Bethan Weldrick headed up the general handling and education session, whilst talking the youngsters through the animals' natural habitats, feeding patterns and how they fit in to the animal world.

Headteacher at Richmond House School, Jane Disley, said: "The children learned a great deal from this very informative day but in a most fun and enjoyable way.

"An appreciation of our wildlife is important for pupils and teaches a real respect for insects and animals of all shapes and sizes. Luckily however, Zoolab took all of the insects back!"
