Headingley pupils get their hands on African art

African art captivated youngsters during a culture event at a Headingley school.

Pupils at Richmond House School in Headingley were joined by artist and tribal expert Peter Wengraf, who brought along a "mini museum" of African artefacts and held classes exploring the arts and crafts of tribal cultures.

"Children learn much more when they can see and touch actual, genuine artefacts rather than just looking at books," said Peter.

"The pupils were enthralled with the African tribal masks used by ancient civilizations. It really was history brought to life and they loved every minute."

Acting headteacher, Julie Godsave, said: "The children learned a great deal from this very informative day but in a most fun and enjoyable way."
