Could love now be in the air for tortured little owl Rocky?
Rocky hit the headlines last week when he was horrifically injured after being strung from a tree by sadistic tormentors in Sherbern-in-Elmet.
Twine wrapped around its wing and the bird spun around until the string cut through his wing and into the flesh.
His plight touched the hearts of people across the globe – with YEP readers from as far as the USA offering cash to boost the reward fund to catch the cruel gang. Now, one week after his ordeal, Rocky’s carers at Selby Wildlife Rehabilitation say he has amazed vets with his progress – and may even have found a mate, after another owl named Billie arrived a few days ago.
Annette Pyrah, from the charity, said: “As one owl weighs more than the other, I am hoping we have a breeding pair, a male and a female.
“And who knows, perhaps next spring there will be a new generation of these endearing little owls.”
She thanked YEP readers and everyone who had sent their good wishes to Rocky and helped contribute to the reward fund, which grew to £800 in the space of a few days.
She said: “He was in such a bad way, his future looked terribly bleak and it was doubtful he would ever fly again.”
But Annette said each day he has grown in strength and his wounds have mended.
She added: “Rocky can now fly reasonably well. If he continues to improve, he will be released back into the wild, but for obvious reasons, not in the same location where he was found.”
