A fundraising ‘runsie’ set up in support of a nine-year-old boy who has leukaemia looks set to return for a second year.

Last year hundreds of people donned onesie pyjama suits and took part in a charity run inspired by Methley Primary School pupil Harry Phillips.

The event followed a charity campaign led by villagers in Methley that helped raise over £5,000 for Candlelighters, a children’s cancer charity based at Leeds General Infirmary.

The second annual Runsie will take place in the village, near Leeds, on Saturday September 14 at 11am. Its route will begin on Station Road and follow the canal.

Harry’s mum Karen Phillips said: “It’s such a good cause Candlelighters and it was just a good fun day out last year.

“The run itself is only 2.85miles, so you can run, walk or do whatever you feel like.

“We were overwhelmed with it last year.”

She said she hopes as many as 400 people will take part in the fun run, which attracted over 250 participants last year and will feature a pre-race warm-up, gifts for adults who finish and medals for under 16s who take part this year.

Refreshments and a barbecue will then follow the race at Methley Working Men’s Club.

Harry is approximately half way through his leukaemia treatment, having been diagnosed with the disease in November 2012.

He is still on a course of daily chemotherapy and hopes to have finished his treatment by March 2016.

Karen added: “Candlelighters have just given us so much support. They supply all the beds, TVs and those things that make our lives easier and Harry’s more enjoyable.”

For further information or to sign up to the Runsie visit www.runsie.co.uk.

Entry costs £10 per adult and £5 per child and additional sponsorship forms are available.
