Harrogate: Endangered bird seller cautioned

A Harrogate man has been cautioned by police after illegally selling a pair of endangered birds.

The man, in his late 60s, was arrested after officers from the National Wildlife Crime Unit and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs searched an address in the town following the sale of two lesser sulphur crested cockatoos.

The endangered birds are prohibited from being traded without the seller holding valid certificates.

PC Gareth Jones, Harrogate and District wildlife crime officer, said: "North Yorkshire Police's wildlife unit is committed to preventing the illegal sale of all endangered species as this trade has a negative impact on the sustainability of the wild populations of these species.

"Anyone involved in the trading of endangered species, either buying or selling, must have the correct paperwork or they will be committing an offence."
