Harrogate Theatre marks 110 years with actors appeal
Harrogate theatre is celebrating its 110th birthday in the New Year with an appeal for actors from its former repertory company to join in the celebrations.
Harrogate Grand Opera House – as the theatre was originally known – opened its doors on January 13, 1900, as a provincial circuit theatre
for star-studded touring companies.
During its turbulent history, which saw it close its doors on several occasions, the theatre has played host to an array of famous names including Charlie Chaplin, Sarah Bernhardt, Brian Murphy, Kate O'Mara,
Martin Shaw, John Noakes and Ben Kingsley.
As part of a special birthday event on January 13, the theatre is playing tribute to The White Rose Players, one of the first permanent repertory companies in the country, which performed around 45 shows a year at Harrogate Theatre.
Amongst the famous names associated with The White Rose Players are Sonia Dresdel and film star Trevor Howard who worked at the theatre in the 1930s, and Brian Rix, Arnold Ridley (of Dad's Army fame) and actor and playwright John Whiting in the 1940s.
Chairman of Harrogate Theatre Jim Clark said: "It is a wonderful occasion to be celebrating such an historic moment in the building's history.
"The theatre has always been a constant resource for the community through the various performances both professional and amateur as well as the wide reaching education and outreach work undertaken. We aim to honour this rich legacy well into the future."
At the birthday celebrations a heritage plaque will be unveiled by Valerie Woodings, one of the original White Rose Players.
At the event Harrogate Theatre will also reveal plans for its next phase of refurbishment which will see the emphasis placed on the backstage areas following the restoration and refurbishment of the public areas.
To continue hosting top quality touring companies, major work is needed on the stage flying equipment, the stage floor as well as upgrades to the lighting and sound equipment.
Chief executive David Bown said: "Harrogate Theatre has been a vital part of the national touring circuit for over a century and to ensure another 100 years of success it is important that we address the mechanics of the building and provide performing facilities fit for the 21st century."
