Harrogate cyclist’s 5,000 mile charity ride
Robert Waterhouse.
A retired businessman from Harrogate is aiming to raise money for victims of catastrophe in Japan by cycling 5,000 miles across America.
Robert Waterhouse, 57, plans to travel 5,000 miles from historic Williamsburg, Virginia on the East Coast to Vancouver, Canada on the West Coast.
He is now seeking sponsorship from individuals and local businesses to help him raise at least £5,000 for international disaster relief charity Shelterbox.
And he is funding the trip himself so every penny he raises in sponsorship and donations will go to the charity.
He said: “With reports of terrible global disasters hitting our screens on an almost daily basis, I decided to do my bit to try and help the relief efforts.
“I’m in the fortunate position that I have taken early retirement and have the time to do something like this.
“So if anyone would like to make a donation, no matter how small, it will be going to a very worthy cause.”
Robert, who will be tackling the 100-day challenge as part of a 14-strong multinational group of cyclists, sets off in a couple of weeks’ time.
A keen long distance cyclist, he has previously cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats but this will be his toughest challenge to date.
Shelterbox, currently working in Japan, helps victims of natural disasters and conflicts by delivering boxes of essential items.
Each box supplies an extended family with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.
