Harewood pupils knit their way to £10,000 prize

Environmentally-conscious pupils at a Leeds school have knitted their way to a big cash prize.

Youngsters from Harewood's Gateways School took the first runner-up place in a competition called npower Climate Cops Green SOS. It challenged entrants to come up with a concept that would promote recycling and benefit their local community.

Children from Gateways hit upon the idea of knitting fashion items like dresses, mobile phone holders and purses out of old plastic bags and laddered tights.

And their ingenuity has now been rewarded with a 10,000 cheque, which they picked up during a ceremony at London's Science Museum.

The prize, handed over by TV presenter Fearne Cotton, will be invested in more school eco-projects.

Presenting the cheque, Fearne said the knitting scheme showed that "if we all pull together we can make a difference to the environment".

She went on: "We're hoping that the success of Gateways will inspire plenty more schools."
