Harehills is an inner-city Leeds community, situated about three miles from the city centre.

Leeds has one of the biggest stocks of old back-to-back terraced houses in the UK, and many of these can be found in Harehills.

Harehills's community is hugely ethnically diverse. It includes groups from England, Ireland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Somalia, The Balkans and several more.

The area is well known for its range of shops and is home to some of the best-stocked greengrocers in Leeds.

The Roundhay Road area of Harehills has also become known as Leeds's "curry mile." Quality take-aways can be found throughout Harehills.

Neighbouring communities include Chapeltown, Gipton and Burmantofts.

Harehills is served by Leeds City Councillors Javaid Akhtar and Alan Taylor (both Liberal Democrat) and Labour's Roger Harington.

At Westminster, part of Harehills is served by Hilary Benn MP, the rest by George Mudie. Both represent Labour.

South Harehills can be reached from the A64 York Road, north Harehills from Roundhay Road.

The community is also only a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Several routes can be used, including heading up York Street, onto Burmantofts Street then up Beckett Street past the landmark St James's Hospital.

Harehills is well served by Leeds's buses. The many services heading there include the 49, 50 and 50A.

Among the community's many unusual features is Leeds Cemetery, in Beckett Street. Soldiers who fought in the Crimean War are buried there, as is Britain's oldest steeplejack.
