There is currently no proper pedestrian crossing facility and local people have safety fears about school children and other local residents taking the risk of crossing this busy junction.

The council have previously refused to fund any traffic lights or crossings at this junction, citing that there was not a sufficient demand for it, and instead suggested that a footpath on a nearby disused railway line was a suitable alternative.

However, after many years of campaigning by local councillors and Colin Burgon MP the council have finally decided to progress the scheme and that a proposal will be put to the Executive Board in September.

Councillor James Lewis (Lab, Kippax & Methley) said: "I am absolutely delighted that the council have finally changed their minds. It is a great relief that residents, particularly school children, could soon be able to cross this busy junction safely with a reduced risk from road traffic.

"This junction is well used as a crossing point across Selby Road. Pedestrian safety should be absolutely paramount, especially for school children who take the same route on a daily basis and hopefully a crossing will mean more children will be able to walk to school."

Councillor Keith Wakefield (Lab, Kippax & Methley) added: "I am very pleased that plans have finally been put in place for traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing to be installed on this junction. It is long overdue and after the disappointment of the scheme being previously refused, it is really great to know that the concerns of local people have been listened to."
