Green-fingered Cross Gates school children reap the benefits
Green-fingered school children at a primary school in Cross Gates will soon be reaping the benefits of their new garden after planting vegetables to be used in their school meals.
The pupils from Cross Gates Primary School, on Poole Crescent, now have a nice place to relax at break time and during the summer some of their lessons will also be taught there.
Volunteers from GE Money worked for eight weeks during the summer to transform some overgrown land into the garden with vegetable beds, decking and picnic tables.
Pupils helped by painting brightly coloured pebbles to decorate the paths.
Headteacher Rosaleen Hamer said: "We've wanted to do something with this space for years, but we just didn't have the funds or manpower to do it.
"It's going to be a great place for the children to relax when the weather gets warmer, but it's also going to be a fantastic way to teach them about plants and food."
