Grave doubts over plan for new Leeds cemetery
Plans have been unveiled to develop a privately-run cemetery in the north Leeds green belt.
A planning application has been submitted to lay out a multi-faith and non-denominational cemetery with 770 plots at Shadwell.
The scheme, proposed for land south of Shadwell Lane and east of Shadwell Park Grove, includes a car park for 20 vehicles, palisade fencing, landscaping scheme and a caretaker’s building.
Opening times would be 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 4pm weekends and bank holidays. It has been estimated that with 770 plots, the cemetery could take a total of 1,540 burials.
A design and access statement accompanying the application, submitted by Mr and Mrs Nathan Wain, says entry to the cemetery will be from Shadwell Lane and the on-site car park has been designed to allow for turning manoeuvres.
It adds: “A remembrance garden, a place for memorial plaques for the deceased, is to be included in our design. There will be headstones allowed in the cemetery and also small flowering shrubs together with a memorial stone or similar laid flat on the grave, if preferred.
“We intend to create an up-to- date cemetery that allows families to visit loved ones in a peaceful, relaxed setting.”

But the scheme, likely to go before the council’s east plans panel within the next few months, has already run into opposition from nearby residents. They fear it will cause traffic problems on a part of Shadwell Lane they claim is too narrow to cope with a large funeral attendance.
An objection lodged by Russell Graham, of Shadwell Park Grove, says: “Just imagine a large funeral coinciding with the school run.”
Another objector, Geraldine Levison, says valued green belt land dividing Leeds and Shadwell will be lost.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 08:20 AMThis seems a perfectly sensible scheme which will maintain a green space and allow for development without affecting the village at all. I suppose if they propose a housing development and build roads to improve access and traffic flow then the residents would welcome it with open arms.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 09:28 PMThey will be building a home for the grounds keeper and a large car park, by the time they've filled the plots there won't be much green left for the green belt! A cemetery will ensure that the division is lost as it will join Shadwell village to Leeds. Also there's lots of wildlife in the field including deer,do we really need to spoil our natural environment and more than we have already?!

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 05:18 PMAs it will be privately run I trust the maintenance upkeep will be part of the agreed plans and I am sorry Mr Graham i feel the school run is not that important and in itself is one of the worst causes of traffic congestion in this city

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:42 PMWould they consider a swap with residents in Inner east Leeds ? A privately run PFI incinerator springs to mind.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:15 PMWho may I ask is going to pay for this cemetery and its maintenance?. We have many cemeteries in Leeds that are run down and neglected without funding a new one that will no doubt go the very same way, along with vandalism and theft that cause heartache to relatives. If money is to come from Leeds City Council in anyway for this project I strongly suggest that 1st and foremost that monies needed to improve our current cemetery situation is give number 1 priority!!
