Golf day in memory of Leeds club stalwart
Golfers from across Leeds gathered on one of the city's courses to remember a well known city businessman who died while playing the sport he loved.
Nineteen months ago Sam Goldman died on the course at Moor Allerton Golf Club and a golf tournament to honour his memory was held at the club he loved so much and often referred to as his second home.
The event was organised by Sam's widow Pam, and daughters Linda Lever and Liz Cohen.
A delighted Liz said it was a day to remember: "It's been a great success and Dad would have approved, he just loved this place.
"Even the occasional shower didn't dampen the spirits. As Dad often said, 'It never rains on a golf course'."
The day, sponsored by Sheila and Leslie Silver, commenced with a leisurely brunch in the clubhouse prior to 80 of Sam's golfing friends taking up their positions to play 18 holes on the famous championship course.
There were 20 teams of four players and competitors stood at designated tees awaiting the signal for the shotgun start.
The day was rounded off with a gala dinner and a prize giving ceremony where the Sam Goldman memorial trophy was awarded to winners Gary Caplin, Derek Henderson, Neil Hardaker and Michael Kilbride.
Sam was always passionate about golf and joined Moor Allerton in 1945 while still in the army.
He was a committee member when the club bought its new site, Blackmoor Farm, in 1970.
He became club captain in the club's golden jubilee year of 1973 and progressed from treasurer and chairman (from 1980-83] to become a life vice-president.
A past captain of the Society of Jewish Golf Captains, Sam played numerous pro-am tournaments.
He always joked that with a cigarette in his mouth and a golf club in his hand he could die happy... which he did.
Prior to suffering a fatal heart attack on January 13, 2009, he strode out of the locker room, collected his trolley and headed off to the tee for his usual Tuesday 3-ball.
On the way he paused briefly outside the Water Hole to blow a kiss to Liz and Linda who had stopped there for a drink.
Moments later in a self-fulfilling prophecy as if he had planned it, Sam played his final game.
