Giant TV spreads police message

EYE-catching crime prevention messages were flashed to drivers and pedestrians in Leeds as part of a crime crackdown involving four police forces.

The ten feet by eight feet TV screen was raised from the roof of a delivery van in Towngate, Calverley, on Tuesday morning and in Town Street, Horsforth, in the afternoon as part of Operation Maximum Impact, which has been launched by the West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside forces.

The month-long campaign aims to send signals to criminals that police are in pursuit and reassure the public in general.

Acting Chief Insp Mark Griffin of Pudsey Weetwood Division in Leeds, said that various information messages had been screened including crime reduction figures in key crimes such as house burglaries.

People had stopped to view the highly visible screen and read the information. In turn his had provided the opportunity for members of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams to speak to them.

Commenting on the campaign, West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Constable David Crompton, said: "Criminals don't recognise county boundaries and nor do we."
