An up-and-coming Leeds actor will bring a touch of Leeds to the Welsh valleys in a new Sky sitcom due to be shown in January.

Rory Girvan, 24, a former pupil of Roundhay School, will playing a character called Sunil ‘Suni’ Choudary in Stella, a sitcom about the trials and tribulations of a 40-something mum in South Wales.

Rory will play the son of a family from Leeds which moves to the area and Ruth Jones, who played Nessa in the BBC comedy series Gavin and Stacey, will be playing the lead role of Stella.

One storyline in the show focuses on the relationship between him and Stella’s daughter.

Rory landed his breakthrough role after a gruelling round of auditions in January and has been filming a total of ten 60-minute episodes on location in Cardiff between July and October.

Rory said: “It was an amazing experience, though it was very hard work and there were long days and a lot of responsibility.

“But then I’d look around and see great actors like Ruth and think, this is what I want to do.”

Rory caught the acting bug after joining the Lidgett Park Methodist church drama group in Roundhay, where he starred in productions like 1066 and All That.

Organiser Carol Russell said: “He played various roles for us before he went to university.

“He was a real asset and I’m really pleased that he’s become a professional actor.”

Rory recalls his first brush with Ruth Jones was when his drama group was cancelled because she was filming scenes in the church for the Leeds-based ITV drama, Fat Friends, in 2004.

Recently, he played various roles on stage at the Contact and Library theatres in Manchester.

He has also appeared at the Soho theatre in London, where he took part in productions for the National Youth Theatre.

Rory currently spends his time between Leeds – his mother and sister live in Roundhay – and London, where he auditioning to get more acting roles.
