Fury at new plan to build Leeds homes

BATTLEGROUND: The land off Outwood Lane in Horsforth.

BATTLEGROUND: The land off Outwood Lane in Horsforth.

Developers have revealed plans to build new homes on a field in Leeds – more than a decade after they withdrew a planning application for the site.

Campaigners celebrated victory almost 12 years ago when they won their fight to stop a scheme to build 57 houses on a field in Horsforth.

Redrow Homes abandoned its appeal to build on the land in Outwood Lane after the city council failed to make a decision about awarding planning permission for the fields.

At the time Redrow also appealed to Environment Secretary John Prescott to step in to show his support for the scheme.

But now Redrow Homes has revealed a new set of plans to develop the site.

Councillor Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) has penned hundreds letters to residents living close to the conservation area about the latest bid for planning permission on Outwood Lane.

He said: “This is the third time that we’ll have been in this position and I am absolutely furious.

“The developers pulled their application but I think that was so that they didn’t have to see it had been refused.

“Whatever numbers they are planning to building, we can’t cope with them on Outwood Lane.

“It is far too dangerous.

“Historically, it is one of the oldest roads we have in Horsforth and we want to conserve the bits that we have got.

“We can’t cope with an additional two houses on there, never mind 200, because it will just clog it up.

“It’s totally unworkable.”

Councillor Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) added: “It is in the conservation area and we deliberately placed it in there because of the surrounding area.

“The land has not be identified as housing land and now we have a neighbourhood in turmoil.

“Where will children go to school?

“It is a nonsense because children will have to cross the A65.”

Well said TRACIEW, its people like that that eradicate British green lands of there beauty there fickle and at 64 should try and preserve whats left of it for the next GENERATION, At 64 seems to me like a spiteful old man with not a lot of family. Who doesnt live as close as you to the proposed site, God forbid they dont build in his back garden as i would be the first to give the thumbs up. Sad Sad man.

The government should not let the houses be built on here full stop, and as of the above comment there are many families opposed to this from all age ranges, not old fogies which as a comment is rude and in my opinion irrelevant the house prices for these houses will start are £250,000, I know of no young families that can afford this kind of mortgage, it is just another money making scheme.... there is more than enough housing in Horsforth as it is in all price ranges! the spelling in Mr Falk's comment is obviously from a man with the spelling capabilities of a 10 year old child. I live on Outwood Lane and it is not welcomed and never will be, every one in this area will fight the housing request, it is a N5 Classified Nature reserve along with a blanket tree preservation order, it is also in the conservation area!!!!!!! I have lived in Horsforth all my life and seen what developments have done to the area, there are more than enough brown sites to build on in and around leeds that should be built upon instead of this beautiful area, young and old enjoy the woods and fields and hopefully it will stay that way, and been 44 i certainly havent got either feet in my grave!!!!!!!

Why would anyone want to build on such a beautiful conservation area, Outwood Lane fields and craggwood are packed full of wildlife and have historical interest . If any building were to take place it would ruin what we have left in Horsforth, The buildings wouldn't be with inkeep of the original buildings in the area and look a real eyesore, The plot in question has historic boundry walls which would be removed and theres TPO on the trees. Why?
