From the golden age of cinema... two reel bargains

TWO cinema projectors which lit up the big screen for thousands of movie-goers from the 1930s to the 1990s are up for sale.

TWO cinema projectors which lit up the big screen for thousands of movie-goers from the 1930s to the 1990s are up for sale.

The pair of Kalee BTH Type S projectors are housed in the old Vale Cinema, Huddersfield Road, Mirfield which first opened its doors in 1939.

Glyn Bellwood, whose G-Sport gym is in part of the semi-derelict building, is renovating the remaining part. He said the dust-covered projectors were still in good condition, but he wanted them to go somewhere they were more appreciated.

He said: "When we came into this part of the building, we found these two projectors just standing here. I'd like for them to go to a good home.

"They are in good condition and it's a shame to see them here not doing anything. They've been up there for decades but when the cinema closed they became useless.

"I'd like to sell them. We can use the space and any extra money will come in useful in converting the building."

Each of the projectors stands about six foot tall and according to a stamp on the side could have been made in Milan, Italy.

The cinema first opened on October 23, 1939, with a single 1,000-seater auditorium, showing There Goes My Heart, before closing in the early 1960s when it was turned into a bingo hall.

It was re-opened as a cinema, with two screens – one with 98 seats, the other 96 – in 1972, closing to the public in 1994.

The old cinema section of the building is being converted into a fitness and youth centre by Mr Bellwood, who plans to create a learning centre for youngsters.

Anyone interested in buying the projectors, call Mr Bellwood on 01924 492627.
