Focus on the life of county’s rivers...
A STUNNING collection of black and white photographs featuring the life of Yorkshire’s rivers is to tour the county.
The exhibition has been created by Ian Beesley, Britain’s only “artist in residence” to a water company – Yorkshire Water.
It will open on Wednesday at Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, which is appropriately sited on the banks of the River Aire, once one of Yorkshire’s most industrialised rivers.
The exhibition portrays the life of both industrial and rural rivers throughout the region.
Beauty
Mr Beesley, well known for his Yorkshire roots but also internationally renowned, has spent almost a year collecting the shots which will be used in the “From Source to Sea” exhibition, capturing the natural beauty of the region’s rivers and reservoirs.
The exhibition is a celebration of Yorkshire Water’s 400m RiverCare campaign to improve the quality of Yorkshire’s river water.
After the launch in Leeds it will tour the county for 18 months, giving Yorkshire’s 4.5 million customers the chance to view the exhibition in their own area.
Mr Beesley said: “It has been a challenging and enjoyable experience with the opportunity to visit some of the most amazing parts of the county, from the tallest waterfall in England to the only coal-barge lift in the world. I hope the exhibition illustrates the diversity, importance and beauty of Yorkshire’s rivers.”
Leeds Museums and Galleries Curator, Martin Gresswell, said: “We are very happy to work once more with Ian to put on this wonderful exhibition and also to work alongside Yorkshire Water. The fact that the museum is situated on the banks of the River Aire means it is perfect for the exhibition.”
The exhibition will be in Leeds until August 4, after which it begins its tour of the county. Venues are planned right across Yorkshire.
Mr Beesley will be adding local photographs at each venue.
Yorkshire Water’s RiverCare Manager, Karen O’Rourke, said: “We’re very excited about this exhibition.
The company’s commitment to the RiverCare campaign is on public display and we hope that hundreds of people go along to see it as it moves to their area.”
