Fire-hit cafe to bloom again next spring

The fire-ravaged Lakeside Cafe in Roundhay Park is set to rise from the ashes next spring.

An exhaustive technical report on the damage, which closed the eaterie in January, has ruled out the possibility that demolition may be necessary.

The report says it can be repaired and does not need to be completely rebuilt.

Councillor John Procter, Leeds City Council's executive board member for leisure, said: "It's great news that the building can be saved. Work will start as soon as possible.

"I would like to thank our tenant, David Rogers, for his calm and professional attitude throughout this time. It is always a pleasure to work with him."

The city council is currently working on designs for the renovated cafe.

David Rogers, who successfully tendered for the cafe nearly three years ago, said: "I am certainly hoping to be back in again by next spring. I have been in touch with our regular customers and they are keen to see the Lakeside back on its feet."

Councillor Matthew Lobley (Con, Roundhay) said: "The Lakeside is a real asset to the park with its friendly staff and quality food and drink, and I cannot wait to see it back up and running. I am sure residents will be relieved it will be back in business next year.

"The parks department should be congratulated for being so prompt in finding alternative catering facilities for this summer. The Pavilion Cafe in the cricket pavilion has been a great success."

Mr Rogers, who formerly ran the Cavendish Pavilion at Bolton Abbey, took over the Lakeside in 2005 after it had been closed for 18 months.

It underwent a 200,000 refurbishment as part of the Roundhay Park improvements.

The cafe was opened 20 years ago, being financed by the proceeds of pop concerts held in the park.
