Firefighters were called out to deal with a serious building fire in west Leeds today.

Fire crews from Stanningley dealt with the office blaze above Maynews newsagents on Church Lane in Pudsey town centre.

The owner of Maynews raised the alarm at 7.25am.

Two fire engines from Stanningley were sent.

Blue Watch Commander Darren Metcalfe told the YEP: “When we arrived there was a fire on the first floor and the windows had gone through.

“Flames were licking up to the second floor.

“Due to the severity of the fire we asked for two more appliances and a hydraulic platform ladder to be sent.

“The owner of Maynews was outside when we arrived.

“He’d opened the shop and smelt smoke. First he squirted some air freshener to get rid of the smell then looked outside and saw upstairs was on fire.

“To find the fire we had all on to get upstairs because of the smoke.

“Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went in. We suspect it started on the first floor.

“A fire investigation officer will now try to establish the cause.”

No-one was injured.
