Fire crews battle blaze at building on edge of Leeds city centre UPDATED

Crews were called to the McCarthy’s site on Education Road off Meanwood Road in Sheepscar shortly before 11am today.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said three units in one single storey building were involved.

Fire engines from Leeds, Hunslet and Moortown were in attendance at the site, which operates as a compressed paper and cardboard storage facility.

There were no reports of anyone being injured.

In an update at 1.15pm, the fire service said the incident had been brought under control.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene throughout this afternoon to work with contractors removing unaffected bales of paper.

A spokesperson for McCarthy’s said: “We can confirm that this morning there was a fire at a building on Education Road, off Meanwood Road, occupied by McCarthy’s Safe Shred, which is a confidential waste disposal facility.

“No one was hurt and fire fighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

“The building is on a different industrial estate to the one incorporating McCarthy’s Storage World and McCarthy’s Removals, and those businesses are entirely unaffected.

“Customers can access their self storage units as usual.

“Service will also be unaffected for McCarthy’s Safe Shred customers. Staff at McCarthy’s are now working with the authorities to find the source of the fire.”
