Fire crew lends helping hand to flood-hit south

Firefighters from Leeds are helping flood-hit communities in the south west.

The crew of 11 from Stanningley Fire Station are in Somerset to ease the widespread problems caused by torrential rain in the last few weeks.

Station commander Alan Jordan said: “We are moving water into a canal to alleviate the lowland flooding. Some houses in the area have been breached and have been evacuated. There are other houses under similar threat which we are endeavouring to save.

“The weather is not too bad at the moment but the forecast is not good so it could all change.”

The crew is provisionally set to return tomorrow but could be called on to stay until the weekend.
