Febru-hairy fun for Leeds hospice

It’s time for the people of Leeds to wear their wigs, trim those tresses and hone that hairdo.

Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley is encouraging locals to let their hair down and take part in Febru-hairy.

The month-long fundraiser is part of a national campaign and will see hundreds of supporters getting creative with their hair.

Six Leeds schools are already signed up for the event and will hold crazy hair styling sessions and look-alike competitions.

Wetherby High School, Shire Oak Primary, Asquith Primary and Pool in Wharfedale School also plan to hold ‘Let your Hair Down Days’.

Wheatfields community fundraiser, Sarah Jane Meyers, said: “It is just incredible, the creativity and enthusiasm of the students is fantastic.

“We are still looking for individuals, sports clubs and other groups who would like to join in Febru-hairy.”

Bars and pubs are also holding hair-themed quizzes and sponsored haircuts and some salons in the city are donating money from each haircut given.

A hair-raising flash mob took over Briggate last weekend to kick-start the fundraising month.

Lindy Hop dancers also performed a range of hair-themed activities at The Light shopping centre on The Headrow on Saturday, February 4, to raise awareness of the charity event.

Georgina Abbott, running and challenge fundraiser at the hospice, said: “It’s the first time the hospice is taking part and it’s just a fun idea to get people to do something different.

“The idea follows on from Movember, which has been really successful in the past.”

Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice on Grove Road provides care for people with life-limiting illnesses as well as their families and loved ones across the local community.

It needs to raise £1.4m every year to keep the hospice running.
