Fears over changes to out-of-hours Leeds healthcare

Concerns over proposed changes to out-of-hours healthcare services have been aired by councillors.

Out of hours services are already available from Lexicon House in Sheepscar, St George’s Centre in Middleton, Wharfedale Hospital, Yeadon Health Centre, St James’s Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary.

But under the new proposals, Lexicon House could be closed and a new centre opened at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s.

Another option would also see Lexicon House close, with an alternative site opening closer to the city centre.

The third option would be to keep the out-of-hours services running as they are now.

Leeds City Council’s Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Board met to discuss three proposals to the urgent care set-up in the city.

Councillors raised concerns over the current location of Lexicon House, which is difficult for visitors to find and too far away from the city centre.

The lack of services in East Leeds was also discussed.

Coun Lisa Mulherin (Lab, Ardsley and Robin Hood), chaired the meeting.

She said: “I am very aware of a gap with East Leeds and I’m quite supportive of having some provision there because it really is a long way for residents to travel to Lexicon House.”

Nigel Gray, deputy director of commissioning for NHS Leeds, said: “We want to ask the people of Leeds what they want us to provide, whether it’s at St James’s, the LGI or to the east of Leeds.

“There are mixed views about Lexicon House and we want to know what the public want to see in terms of services for the future.”

The public is being asked to have their say on what changes they want to see before consultation ends on March 4.

Consultations and drop-in sessions will be held in the next couple of months. For details visit www.leeds.nhs.uk/consultations.
