Fast food driver jailed for 100mph chase

A fast food delivery driver who hit speeds of over 100mph in 30mph zones during a 'mad' high speed police chase has been jailed for a year.

Police spotted Husnain Abbas, 23, driving a Vauxhall Astra at 52mph in a 30mph zone on Wakefield Road, Dewsbury, Leeds Crown Court heard.

He failed to stop and went through three sets of red lights, narrowly avoided crashing head-on into a cyclist just after 11pm on July 20.

Prosecutor Barbara Lennon said Abbas was doing between 80 and 110mph in 30mph zones as he headed towards Wakefield, where he drove along Marsh Way and Jacobs Well Lane.

The court was shown CCTV footage from the West Yorkshire Police helicopter as Abbas entered Wakefield city centre where he failed to give way at two junctions, narrowly avoiding hitting a taxi.

He went the wrong way round a roundabout and drove on a pavement where he only just missed hitting pedestrians.

The court heard Abbas, of Duke of York Street, Wakefield, made a call for help on his mobile phone during the chase.

The 15-minute chase ended when Abbas drove into back streets and abandoned the Astra before climbing into the back seat of a Lexus.

He was driven off but police later stooped the Lexus and Abbas was arrested.

Elyas Patel for Abbas said: "This was utter road madness and stupidity on his part."

Mr Patel said Abbas sped off because he "needed to take home trouble with the police like a hole in the head."

Mr Patel said Abbas is intelligent, has seven GCSEs and before his arrest worked for the Shalamar Restaurant in Wakefield as a delivery driver. He later worked in the kitchen at the restaurant.

Jailing Abbas, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC, told him: "This was a gross piece of dangerous driving."

Abbas, who had admitted dangerous driving, was banned from the roads for three years.
