Family of Roundhay ski victim air safety concerns

The family of a Roundhay man killed in a snowboarding accident in the French Alps have criticised safety measures where he died.

Phil Tate, 32, was killed when he fell 80ft down a crevasse in the Mont Blanc range above Chamonix on Sunday.

Today a member of his family, who asked not to be named, called for more to be done to warn of the risks posed by the mountains.

The relative said the police in France had told him that an average of FORTY winter sports enthusiasts are killed near Chamonix every season.

Many, like businessman Mr Tate, die after plunging into deep crevasses which have been covered over by snow and ice.

Despite that, said the relative, in the area where Sunday's tragedy happened there were no signs warning skiers and snowboarders to beware of the hidden dangers beneath their feet.
