Family of five rescued from Leeds house blaze
A Leeds family-of-five was rescued from their smoke-filled home by firefighters last night.
The family was alerted by a smoke alarm - and firefighters said that without it the fire could have had tragic consequences.
The parents, who are thought to be in their 30s, and three children aged eight months, three years and seven years, were upstairs and asleep when a fire caused by a grill in the kitchen triggered the smoke alarms at their semi-detached home in Hill Crescent at Rawdon.
The father raised the alarm.
Fire crews from Rawdon, Cookridge and Idle rushed to the scene.
Crew Manager Paul Reynolds from Rawdon, who led the operation, said the house had filled with smoke.
“The fire alarm woke them up,” he said. “If it had not been for the fire alarm it could have been a lot more serious. The fire damage was not too bad but there was smoke throughout the house.
“The man was downstairs. The family was upstairs, and one was still asleep.
“We put in a team with breathing apparatus and a hose reel to lead them to safety. They all suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Leeds General Infirmary.”
The fire was quickly extinguished and the house was ventilated to clear it of smoke.
Rawdon fire station is to close due to cuts in funding from the Government. Its operational duties will be merged with Otley fire station, which operates on a part-time, on-call basis and is also to close.
A single new station will replace the two, and will probably be located in Menston.
