The elegance, grace and supreme hunting ability of beautiful birds of prey were on show yesterday at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Amazed onlookers gasped with delight as the wonderful creatures took flight above their heads, in a thrilling demonstration of the ancient sport.

Falconers from York Birds of Prey Centre showcased the magnificent skills of falcons, owls and eagles as part of the event.

After the show, those with ‘experience’ tickets were able to handle and feed the birds, as well as learn more about them from the expert falconers.

Some even donned special protective leather gloves, in order to hold the birds and take photos.

The falconry show is £4 for adults and £2 for under-16s and OAPs, while the falconry experience - which includes entry to the show, plus a 45-minute handling session afterwards - costs £9 for adults and £7 for under-16s and OAPs.

Other dates in April are available but book soon.

High life: Beautiful birds of prey at Royal Armouries.
