A beard enthusiast is hoping to bring Yorkshire’s hairiest men together for the first time.
David Alcorn, who lives in Headingley, has been cultivating his facial hair for six years and recently took part in the National Beard and Moustache Championships.
The 24-year-old, who is a regional officer for the British Beard Club, is hoping to bring Leeds university beard groups and local enthusiasts together.
David, who is the president of Leeds Metropolitan University Students’ Union, said: “It’s all a bit of fun really, I wouldn’t call it a sport, there’s no physical effort required it’s more of an art form – it takes a bit more maintenance.
“I often think that shaving is like feminising your face – you’re missing out on the blessings that God gives you.”
His hairy journey started when he grew a beard aged 18, found a comedic band called The Beards on the internet and saw they were playing at The World Beard and Moustache Championships in 2008.
He soon joined the British Beard Club, which organises events for its 580 UK members, and David is now hoping to bring beards together starting with a society at Leeds Met.
He said: “I think every man should grow a beard at least once in their life.”
David recently competed in the natural beard with styled moustache category at the National Beard and Moustache Championships, in Brighton, but failed to claim a prize.
