Factory workers have been evacuated after an explosion at a Leeds furniture factory.
Fire crews from Leeds, Gipton, Hunslet, Morley, Stanningley and Batley were scrambled to Curtis Furniture, in Haigh Park Road, Stourton, when a dust extraction unit positioned outside the building blew up today just after 12noon.
Haigh Park Road was closed and surrounding buildings were cleared as fire officers tackled a blaze which ensued in a 150m by 70m area.
A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman told the YEP that nobody was injured but there was a “reasonable amount of damage to the premises”.
She said there was no longer any visible fire and that the incident was under control.
The closure of Haigh Park Road, which has now been reopened, led to congestion on the M621 and surrounding roads.
The spokeswoman said the cause of the explosion was under investigation and the Health and Safety Executive have been requested to visit the scene.
