Ex-Sunderland chairman to be Leeds Metropolitan University’s chancellor

Sir Bob Murray is to become the new Chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University.

The businessman, philanthropist, and passionate supporter of education who also has a CBE will be officially installed at a formal ceremony at the university next year.

Sir Bob has been a leading business figure in Yorkshire for the last 43 years.

But he is probably best known for his chairmanship of Sunderland AFC from 1986 to 2006 - selling it to Niall Quinn and a consortuium. He is now its life president.

Sir Bob is co-sponsor of Academy 360 which educates four to 16-year-olds and set up the pioneering Foundation of Light charity.

In 1969 he studied accountancy at the old Leeds Polytechnic.

The father-of-three, who wife Sue is from Leeds, said: “I feel very privileged to have been invited to become chancellor of such an esteemed institution and was thrilled to accept.”
