Ex-cinema site will house flats and shops
FLATS and shops are to be built on the site of a former Wakefield city centre cinema which has stood derelict for a decade.
Developers yesterday won planning permission to flatten the old ABC cinema on Sun Lane and build 119 apartments and eight shops.
Michael Townsend, of Wakefield-based Townsend Planning Consultants who have submitted the plans, said: "This development will bring key regeneration in a neglected and run down part of the city centre and result in a high quality development.
"It represents an opportunity to provide a prestigious development which we hope will provide a key regeneration scheme in this part of the city centre."
Site owner Shazad Riaz, who bought the site two-and-a-half years ago, said: "We are going to start building in March and it will take about 18 months to complete."
The cinema was closed in 1997 following the opening of Cineworld at Westgate Retail Park.
It was opened as the Regal in 1935 before it was taken over by EMI in 1969,who converted it to a three screen cinema in 1976.
It was renamed Cannon in 1987 and got its final name of the ABC in 1995.
