Former homeless people in Leeds have been digging in to a gardening project.
Emmaus Leeds has rented a double plot at Osmondthorpe Lane Allotments and transformed it from a derelict site into a picturesque green space.
The charity provides volunteer work for the formally homeless along with accommodation and support and it hopes to grow and food that it can use for its own self sufficiency in the future.
Andy Jones, 52, has been at Emmaus for 10 years and is currently undertaking his own project at the allotment, using salvaged materials such as wooden bed slats and pallets to build a greenhouse.
He said: “It’s fantastic to have another outlet for companions to get out of the community, find something they can enjoy and contribute towards.”
The Groundwork charity in Leeds also helped transform the site, donating a polytunnel, sheds, a fence, compost, hand tools, fruit tree, bushes, herbs and seeds and also provided gardening and cookery workshops for Emmaus clients to attend.
Sam Parry, horticultural officer said: “It was fantastic working alongside the staff and companions at Emmaus Leeds.
“Together we achieved a lot in a short amount of time.
“We wish them all the best for the future. Keep on growing!”
Volunteers are needed to help run the allotment.
