Election reaction: Labour holds Leeds North East
Heading back to Westminster for the fourth time, Fabian Hamilton MP said he did so with a sense of privilege and pride.
In the last Parliament Mr Hamilton found himself embroiled in the row over MPs' expenses – a fact not unnoticed by his political opponents.
Leeds North East was targeted by the Tories who needed a swing of 7.8%, but they fell short.
In 2005 Mr Hamilton enjoyed a majority of just over 5,000 and, as a result of boundary changes, went into this General Election with a notional majority of 6,762.
He held off the challenge of Conservative Matthew Lobley, winning with a majority of 4,545. Mr Lobley also stood against Mr Hamilton, right, in 2005.
Mr Hamilton was delighted with the result. He said: "We increased our number of votes by over 2,000 on last time.
"I am absolutely delighted. I didn't think in the current climate we would win with a majority almost as big as the last one.
"It has been a privilege to serve for 13 years and now for a while longer."
Mr Lobley, 34, who has represented the Roundhay Ward on Leeds City Council for the past seven years, said: "While I am disapppointed to lose out, I think we have had a good strong result for the Conservatives in gaining over 2,000 more votes than last time."
