A man has been arrested after reports of a string of random attacks on members of the public in Leeds city centre.
The 44-year-old, from Leeds, is in custody following six alleged assaults – including two on elderly women – today (Tuesday).
It is claimed he walked through the city centre punching people at random.
Sgt Andy Berriman, of City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said two people began following the alleged attacker after hearing an elderly woman scream on Briggate.
There were further incidents on Duncan Street and at the bus station before officers arrested a man in Lincoln Green.
Sgt Berriman added: “These were an unprovoked attacks on random members of the public.
“Our thanks go out to witnesses who were so disgusted by the attack on the elderly ladies they followed the suspect on foot to the Lincoln Green area providing a running commentary, enabling the police to arrest the man.”
