Education chiefs are backing the Yorkshire Evening Post’s new campaign to give schools in Leeds the chance to show off their green power.

We have teamed up with British Gas to launch our exciting ECO KIDS! challenge.

The initiative will give all primary and special schools in Leeds the chance to land a prize that will help them support a greener future and learn about the environment.

The competition’s two winning schools will receive environmentally-friendly makeovers worth a combined total of £100,000.

Schools and their pupils need to work together to collect a variety of tokens that will be printed in the YEP every day until Saturday, April 19.

The two schools which collect the highest number of points will be crowned the champions and receive a special eco makeover.

Councillor Judith Blake, executive member for children’s services, said:“How we use our school buildings can provide some of best and most practical ways to help children and young people learn about their impact on the environment.

“These are valuable lessons they can take and use at home to help their wider community become greener.

“The Eco Kids challenge is an ideal opportunity for school staff, pupils and their families to learn more about the environment and build on the great work they’re already doing.”

Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment, added: “We’re always looking at ways we can reduce energy use, costs and carbon emissions in the way that we provide our services.

“Schools across the city are already embracing a greener ethos in the classroom and benefitting from a range of eco-improvements.

“With the investment on offer through the Eco Kids campaign, schools can go even further.”
