eBay says sorey for banning dad's army game

Auction giant eBay apologised to one of its users today after blocking the sale of a Dad's Army board game because it could promote racial hatred.

Officials at eBay conceded that the game, based on the much-loved television series and being offered for sale by retired bank official David Davidson, had been wrongly classed as "offensive material" by its checking systems.

Mr Davidson, from Droitwich, Worcestershire, was informed that the lot could not be sold because swastikas on the front of the game's box could foster violence and hatred, as well as racial or religious intolerance.

The 62-year-old had set an initial price of just 99p for the game after coming across it while clearing his loft, but was stunned to receive an email saying his listing had been removed.

Mr Davidson said: "Everybody knows and loves Dad's Army - to have it banned from eBay because it has little pictures of swastikas is political correctness gone mad.

"The fact is that nobody in the world is going to be offended by the game."

The would-be seller, who has traded around 1,000 items on eBay, added: "Dad's Army is the most harmless TV programme in the world. There's no swearing in it or anything."

Mr Davidson, whose father served in the Army Pay Corps, went on: "I'm annoyed because I spent quite a bit of time on it.

"I could easily have slung the game in the bin, but I thought somebody somewhere would want it."

A spokeswoman for eBay stressed that more than 100 million items were for sale on the site and that it did everything it could to bar items which promoted racial hatred.

The spokeswoman said: "While we are committed to keeping items that promote racial hatred off eBay, a Dad's Army board game is clearly not one of these.

"We hope that Captain Mainwaring would have been impressed with our efficiency!"
