Eat your heart out Simon Cowell...

TELLY talent spotter Simon Cowell's got competition from an ambitious Yorkshire teenager.

David Joyce may only be 16 but that hasn't stopped him launching a search for the best stage performers in Leeds.

Drawing inspiration from Cowell's smash hit TV show Britain's Got Talent, Daniel has cheekily given his contest the title of East Leeds Got Talent.

And he's even extended an invitation for his older rival to attend the competition's auditions and final at Swarcliffe Working Men's Club.

David, who lives with his mum and dad in Swarcliffe and goes to Boston Spa Comprehensive School, said: "I don't think Simon's going to turn up – but you never know, do you?

"I wouldn't mind taking his place on the TV in a few years.

"He can't go on forever – let's face it, he's getting on a bit now!"

The auditions for David's competition are being held at Swarcliffe WMC from 7.30pm on each of the next two Wednesdays.

They are due to feature a whopping 40 acts, ranging in age from eight to 77.

Most of those taking part are singers and dancers.

The contest's grand final, meanwhile, will take place on July 29, again starting at 7.30pm.

David admits the competition's three nights promise to be hectic affairs – but also says he thrives on pressure.

"You've just got to keep a cool head," he said.

"There'll be a lot to do but I'll have to get on with it."

David said he was very grateful to Swarcliffe WMC for letting him use its premises and putting up prize money for the competition.

He also praised the help he had received from Swarcliffe Detached Youth Project, which provides support to local youngsters aged 11 to 25.

It is currently searching for much-needed new funding. For details on how to back its work, ring Darren Meade on 0113 293 0171.
