The countdown to this summer’s Garforth Arts Festival began today as organisers revealed details of an event that promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Acclaimed folk band Bellowhead top the bill at the annual festival’s traditional final night Playground Party concert, which takes place at Garforth Academy on July 6.

Other acts appearing at the Playground Party include singer-songwriter Kate Rusby and soul and gospel star Ruby Turner. It will feature two outdoor stages – one hosted by radio station East Leeds FM – and a 300-seater indoor auditorium.

But the festival is about much more than just its final night celebration.

Starting on June 24, its programme includes concerts at venues such as St Mary’s Church and Garforth Working Men’s Club as well as a wide range of educational activities for local youngsters.

Festival director Dave Evans said: “The 2013 festival is our most ambitious so far.

“We are delighted with the quality of the artistic programme and once again our educational programme will involve well over 3,000 young people.”

Taking place this year for the ninth time, the festival is organised by Garforth Academy and the School Partnership Trust with support from the Arts Council, the Leeds Inspired funding body and Leeds City Council.

Coun Andrea McKenna (Lab, Garforth & Swillington) said: “We are delighted to support the 2013 Garforth Arts Festival.

“The festival is such an important event for Garforth and the wider community of Leeds.”

Tickets are available from Monday from the website as well as Jumbo Records in Leeds city centre or Cielo Bookshop on Main Street in Garforth.
