Driving tests in Leeds hit by strike
DRIVING tests were hit by a strike by examiners today.
The strike, which also affected staff in the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and Highways Agency, was staged by up to 8,500 members of the Public and Commercial Services union. Test centres in Leeds were among those affected.
The union said staff were paid salaries as low as 12,528, and that low pay across the department has been compounded by below inflation pay offers.
Union general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Pay in the civil service is a mess, no more so than in the Department for Transport and its agencies where pay inequality and low pay are being fuelled by below inflation pay offers.
A spokeswoman for the Department for Transport said: "We are trying to minimise disruption."
