Driver killed on bypass was Stephanie Hammill case officer

The driver killed when his car smashed into the central reservation of a busy bypass on Monday was a police sergeant who had recently been commended for his part in the Stephanie Hammill investigation.

David Heptinstall, 41, of Crigglestone, a detective sergeant in the crime division, was driving a VW Golf along the A650 Wrenthorpe Bypass in Wakefield towards J41 of the M1 when it left the carriageway and crashed around 7.55am.

Mr Heptinstall was taken to Pinderfields Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He joined West Yorkshire Police in 1990 and served in the Huddersfield and Wakefield areas before joining the crime division.

A married man, he leaves a wife and two children aged 16 and 18.

Det Chief Supt Howard Crowther, head of the crime division, said: "We are all saddened by David's sudden death. He was dedicated to his job which he enjoyed immensely.

"He was recently commended for his key part in a four-year investigation and conviction of a Greek national for the manslaughter of Stephanie Hamill, but it is his wry sense of humour that his colleagues are already missing. Our support goes to his family and friends."

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone who saw the VW Golf before the crash to contact them on 01924 295 436.
