Dressed up for a day at the races
THE SEARCH is on to find Yorkshire's best-dressed lady racegoer.
Yorkshire's nine racecourses – Beverley, Catterick, Doncaster, Pontefract, Redcar, Ripon, Thirsk, Wetherby and York – are to each host a Ladies' Day before September, with competitons to find the best-dressed lady racegoer.
Prizes are on offer throughout the season and each winner will be invited to a grand finale on Ladies' Day (September 11) during the St Leger Festival at Doncaster.
Actress Claire King, from TV's Emmerdale and Bad Girls will be there to help judge the overall winner, who will win the star prize of a luxury pampering weekend for two at Aldwark Manor, near York.
The first Ladies' Day is an evening meeting at Wetherby, on May 29, where 1,000 worth of vouchers from online boutique jemboutique.com is up for grabs.
A luxury short break to Dubai is on offer to the winner at York, which hosts its Ladies' Day as part of the Ebor Festival on August 21.
Other prizes from across the county include jewellery, fashion, accessories and other exciting goodies worth thousands of pounds.
Organisers say record numbers of women are flocking to the races, with more than 39 per cent of national racegoers being female.
Women typically can make up to between 40 per cent and 45 per cent of the attendance on Ladies' Days.
Claire King said: "I love the races and I adore dressing up.
"I think the Ladies' Days are a fabulous idea and a great excuse for women all over Yorkshire to get out their hat and their best frock.
"It is also a fantastic day out. Women really enjoy the social side as much as the racing and bring a whole new dimension to it."
Last year's best-dressed lady racegoer was Carol Fawthrop, a nail technician from Tong, near Bradford, who entered the competition at York and then went on to win the final in September at Doncaster.
She recently went to Aldwark Manor as part of her prize.
Her advice is to choose an outfit that complements your figure and colouring and then to find hat and shoes to match.
She added: "It was a great experience and I would recommend anyone who likes dressing up and going to the races to just go for it!"
