Dickie Bird raises glass to Fred Trueman ale

Umpire Dickie Bird raised a toast to the first bottles of an ale dedicated to a Yorkshire and England legend – and one of his closest friends.

The Freddie Trueman Yorkshire Ale, brewed by Skipton-based Copper Dragon, was officially launched yesterday at the HQ of the brewery by the umpire and Fred's widow Veronica.

The launch of the ale took place ahead of the unveiling of a 90,000 bronze statue of the fast bowler in full flight in Skipton on March 18.

Steve Taylor, MD and founder of Copper Dragon, said: "We're delighted to finally be able to launch the Freddie ale which has been two months in development and we're sure it will bowl over cricket and beer lovers alike."

'Fiery Fred', he was the first man to take 300 Test wickets.

He made his debut for Yorkshire in 1949 and for England in 1952.

He later became a popular and outspoken radio summariser.

He died in 2006 aged 75.
