Detective arrested in fraud probe

A SENIOR detective was among ten people detained by West Yorkshire Police probing fraud and money laundering offences.

Det Insp Shakeel Ahmed, from Sandal, Wakefield, who serves with South Yorkshire Police, was questioned at Wakefield's Wood Street Police Station following the swoops on homes and business premises in the Agbrigg and Sandal areas earlier this week.

South Yorkshire Police have not commented on the arrest of DI Ahmed. All those arrested were later released on bail pending further inquiries.

West Yorkshire Police have declined to give details of those arrested other than to say that nine, including a woman, were detained in Agbrigg and one in Sandal.

During the raids, officers seized approximately 150,000 cash, 14 cars believed to be work in excess of 150,000 including a BMW X5, Jaguar XKR and a Mazerati, and a significant amount of gold jewellery. What was believed to be a cannabis farm was also discovered and dismantled by police.

Det Insp Paul O'Dowd, of Wakefield Police, said: "These people have been arrested in relation to a money laundering investigation.

"We have invested money to set up a financial investigation unit to deal with this type of investigation which involves criminal property being converted into cash and made to appear legitimate. "

People guilty of money laundering and fraud risk having their assets such as homes, vehicles and other possessions confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
