WORK has begun to demolish the West Park Centre in Spen Lane, West Park.

Last year owners Leeds City Council announced plans to pull down the education centre and use some of the cash from selling the land to build an alternative community facility as it was too costly to refurbish the site at £4.2m.

However the plan drew outrage from local councillors and MP Greg Mulholland, plus community campaigners, who protested about the closure of the former 1950s school.

Up to £800,000 will be made available to create a new community facility on the same site.
