Debbie Leigh: Happy doing the in thing on a Saturday night

MUCH as I love a good night out – as you can see from the name of this column – I'm also a big fan of the quiet night in.

And when I say quiet, I mean an evening at home, just me, myself and I –and the cats, of course.

On Saturday, with Mr N heading over to Manchester to rave it up, I organised a girly night in that was so clichd I surprised even myself.

I armed myself with two chick flicks (movie versions of books I've read, so surely not quite as bad?) a packet of Chocolate Buttons (regular, not giant – how's that for restraint?) a zit-busting face mask and a stack of cushions to put my feet up on.

My girl-not-to-be-interrupted evening even went a step further towards parody when one of the kits curled up under my chin and nodded off there in a little ball – cuter than any greeting card picture – while I let loose and had a good old sob at any scene that even hinted at emotion.

Hey, at least there were no scented candles – do I redeem myself slightly with that?

As I headed off to bed at midnight I decided to ring Mr N to see how his night was going and instantly got passed around a series of mates, all very merry and telling me they wished I was there.

The disparity between our evenings was summed up as they talked about the evening's fashion winners and losers, where they had been and where they were headed, while I leapt around the room like a deranged beast, swatting at the bluebottles that had invaded the house during the day while the windows were open.

(Strangely satisfying when you get one, as long as it doesn't splatter the paintwork)

As one BF started to say "I can't believe how many of our mates are out tonight", another whispered "don't tell her that..." – clearly worried I would spiral into depression at the thought of everyone partying without me.

But far from feeling left out, it was great to chat to them, to hear all the noise and chaos in the background and imagine myself there in the midst of the madness, at the same time knowing that I was just a few minutes away from sleep, glorious sleep while their night (and aching feet from killer heels) was just beginning.

And although they were glamming it up on the dancefloor and the events of my evening were never going to make anyone squeal with excitement, it was absolute bliss for me.

I might have looked horrific in my bright green face mask, and my comfy shorts and vest combo would have made Gok Wan faint on the spot, but I didn't have to justify my film choices to anyone and I was free to sob away to my heart's content, without feeling like a complete wally.

I even wiped my tears away with my top rather than getting up for a tissue. Reckless eh?

Hey, it's not like my partying days are over, far from it. Life is just a bit more tame at the moment – with good reason.

My friends are already counting down the weeks – not just until this little baby hatches but before they can drag me out for a night on the tiles again.

For the time being though, I'm more than happy to limit them to ultra special occasions.

And let's not forget the added benefits of a tame night in.

I was up at 8am on Sunday with a clear head and out for a walk by 9am.

Funnily enough no-one seemed willing to take my phonecalls at that time of the morning.

And I've got a sneaky feeling that when they finally got enough Ibuprofen down them to be able to get out of bed, they were probably quite jealous of my quiet night in.

I'm lycan those torsos

UNLIKE most Twi-hards, I'm still counting down the days before I get my next fix of Twilight heaven.

I was all booked in to see it with a mate last Friday before she revealed she was selfishly going on holiday and wouldn't be back til Thursday this week.

So, instead of being one of the first to see Eclipse, the third film in the vampire saga, I'm now going to be one of the last – with three days still to go before I'm reunited with my fave angst-ridden, love-torn teens.

Still, I already know I have great things to look forward to – including plenty of shots of gorgeous, muscle-bound Jacob prowling around half naked.

To anyone out there who has so far managed to escape the obsession with this series, no, this isn't gratuitous flesh-flashing.

This propensity for actor Taylor Lautner and his similarly bronzed, buff buddies to spend most of their time topless happens to an unavoidable side effect of their characters' condition – another reason to take your hat off (as well as your shirt) to writer Stephenie Meyer for that ingenious touch.

So I know it's going to be worth waiting for.

My buddy had just better make sure she can make it this Friday, or Bella won't be the only one whose neck is on the line.
